Two Ghanaian Writers Longlisted for 2026 Commonwealth Short Story Prize

Two Ghanaian writers have earned international recognition after being named on the longlist for the Commonwealth Short Story Prize 2026.

Yeayi Kobina, for the story “A Wife for Our Husband,” and Mclord Selasi, for “Salt of the Earth,” are among fewer than 200 writers selected from a record 7,806 entries submitted across the Commonwealth.

The Commonwealth Foundation announced the longlist on 14 April, highlighting a diverse pool of emerging voices from Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Europe, and the Pacific. Although only 25 writers will advance to the final shortlist, longlisted entrants are recognised as promising talents whose work stood out to judges during the selection process.

Organisers described the longlisted authors as “voices to watch,” noting that many of the selected stories sparked strong discussions among the judging panel despite not making the final shortlist.

The Commonwealth Short Story Prize is one of the most competitive international literary awards for unpublished short fiction, and recognition at this stage is considered a significant milestone for rising writers.
