Ghanaian Writer Widad Karim Selected for 2026 Abebi AfroNonfiction Foundation Fellowship

Widad Karim has been selected for the inaugural 2026 Abebi AfroNonfiction Foundation Fellowship, marking a significant milestone in her literary journey and bringing her one step beyond the longlisting stage announced earlier.

The pan-African fellowship brings together emerging women writers working in creative nonfiction, offering them an opportunity to develop their craft, exchange ideas and explore new possibilities in telling African stories.

Karim, a writer from Kumasi, Ghana, was previously named among the longlisted writers for the fellowship. Her subsequent selection places her among the inaugural cohort of women writers chosen to participate in the programme, which celebrates the power of nonfiction storytelling and the diverse experiences of African women.

Beyond her personal writing journey, Karim contributes to Ghana's literary ecosystem as an editor at Creatives Project Ghana (CPG), a community committed to supporting Ghanaian creatives and creating opportunities for writers and other creative practitioners.

Her selection is an encouraging moment for Ghana's literary community and a reminder of the growing opportunities for African writers to share their stories on wider platforms.
