Ghanaian artist, poet and educator Professor kąrî’kạchä seid’ou has been named the recipient of the 2026 Prince Claus Fund Impact Award in recognition of his decades-long contribution to contemporary art, creative education and the development of artistic communities in Ghana and across West Africa.

The award recognises Seidou’s work in challenging conventional approaches to art education and creating new opportunities for artists to question established ideas, exchange knowledge and develop independent creative practices.

According to the Prince Claus Fund, his influence extends beyond his individual artistic work to the generations of artists he has mentored and the creative communities he has helped build. His work has contributed to reshaping how art is taught, practised and understood in Ghana.

Seid’ou is a professor and Dean of the Faculty of Art at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, where he has played a significant role in transforming art education. Through his experimental teaching and research, he has encouraged students to move beyond conventional artistic methods and explore more collaborative and socially engaged approaches to creative practice.

One of his major contributions is the Emancipatory Art Teaching Project, which challenged inherited models of art education and encouraged students to question established systems of knowledge and cultural authority.

He also co-founded blaxTARLINES, an artist-run community that brings together artists, students, curators and other cultural practitioners. The initiative promotes collaboration, shared knowledge and artistic experimentation, helping connect Ghana’s contemporary art scene with wider international networks.

A central idea in seid’ou’s work is that art can function as a shared resource rather than simply a commodity. His approach places emphasis on collective learning, open exchange and the development of communities in which artists can support one another and challenge dominant ideas about artistic production.

Born in Accra in 1968, seid’ou has maintained a longstanding connection with KNUST and Ghana’s contemporary art community. His work as an artist and educator has helped influence discussions about artistic freedom, cultural history and the future of art education across the region.

The Prince Claus Fund presents its Impact Award every two years to artists and cultural practitioners whose work has made a significant contribution to their societies. The award is distinct from the Fund’s Seed Awards, which support emerging creatives with €5,000 each.

Seid’ou is the sole recipient of the 2026 Impact Award. The Prince Claus Fund is scheduled to formally present the award at the Royal Palace in Amsterdam on November 26, 2026, during its anniversary awards week.
