Ghanaian Film Producer and Co-founder of Luu Vision Media, Kofi Owusu-Afriyie, has been announced as a participant for the 2026 edition of the African Producers and Accelerator (APA) initiative for his movie, ‘The Fisherman.’
It was announced at the Cannes Film Festival alongside five other outstanding Producers: Babalwa Baartman and David Franciscus from South Africa, Mimi Bartels and Abba Makama from Nigeria and Khalid Awad from Sudan.
Launched in 2025, the African Producers Accelerator, funded by the Bertha Foundation, the National Film and Video Foundation of South Africa (NFVF) and Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX) is an initiative that seeks to respond to peculiar challenges often faced by many mid-career African Film Producers by providing a combination of advisory work, business development support and curated access to investors and international networks.
In this year's edition, the participants will pitch their projects to selected film investors; First, at the conclusion of a lab taking place in Cape Town in July and also at CANEX WKND, a four-day industry event which will take place in Lagos in November. This will happen after a three-month intensive preparation as part of its sophomore edition. They will also be joined by the Alumni cohort of the APA’s 2025 inaugural edition to participate in the investor program.
Kofi Owusu-Afriyie’s ‘Fisherman’ was first premiered at the Venice Biennale Film Festival in August, 2024 and has since been nominated and won several awards including the UNESCO’s Fellini Medal, the Home Box Office (HBO) short film awards and the Diversity of Cannes Pan African Film Festival Special Jury award. He continues to make great strides in both the local and international film industries, representing a stepping stone towards the country's achievements in the world of film.
