HummingBird Journal Issue 3 is calling all African artists and photographers! Submit your work for a chance to be featured in our upcoming issue.
As part of our celebration of African Union Day, we are opening our doors to creatives from across the continent and the diaspora.
We do not have a prescribed theme for this issue. What we are seeking is work that feels ‘authentically African’. We won’t attempt to define that—Africa is far too vast, layered, and beautifully diverse for a single definition.
Send us your strongest, most honest visual representations of:
- the places you come from
- the cultures that shape you
- the stories you carry
- the people and relationships around you
- moments of humour, warmth, and everyday life
- the futures you imagine
Let your work show us Africa as you know it—or as you want it to be known.
We have a narrative-shifting mandate, and we are especially interested in work that challenges dominant or limiting portrayals of the continent.
Go bold. Go wild. Take us on a journey through your lens or your medium.
We Are Seeking:
- Photography series (documentary, portrait, conceptual, etc.)
- Digital art and illustrations
- Mixed media and experimental visual work
- Fine art (painting, collage, etc.)
- Short visual essays or photo stories
(Selected artists may be asked to include a brief artist statement.)
Submission Guidelines:
- Submit up to 5 images (JPEG/PNG, high resolution)
- Include titles, medium, and a short description or artist statement (max 300 words)
- Clearly indicate if the works are part of a series or standalone pieces
Eligibility:
This call is open to African creatives only.
At HummingBird, we use ‘African’ broadly and inclusively. You are welcome to submit if you:
- are a citizen of an African country (on the continent or in the diaspora)
- are of African heritage or descent (including mixed heritage)
- are a non-African with a strong, lived connection to the continent (e.g., born, raised, or long-term residence)
Additional requirements:
- You must be 18 years or older
- Artists featured in Issues 1 and 2 are not eligible
- We do not accept AI-generated or AI-assisted work
- Submissions must be original and unpublished (no prior public exhibition or online publication)
Deadline:
Submissions close: June 20
Late submissions will not be considered.
